Singapore Tuition Articles

WHAT’S NEXT after PSLE

This article gives parents a glimpse of the changes in the secondary education system in Singapore, in particular the Integrated Programmes (IP). If parents wish to know more about the IP or have any queries on post-primary education, they can send their queries through the enquiry form.

The education landscape in Singapore is constantly evolving. With the introduction of Integrated Programmes and the offer of International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, Singapore is moving towards an education system that is more flexible and diverse. The aim is to provide students with greater choice to meet their different interests and ways of learning. Being able to choose what and how they learn will encourage them to take greater ownership of their learning.

The Integrated Programmes (IP) was introduced in 2004 to provide a seamless secondary and Junior College education.  It allows students to bypass the O levels and enter JC, where they sit for the A levels or International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. The time “saved” by not having to prepare for the GCE O-Level Examination is used to develop pupils’ intellectual curiosity, encourage them to undertake research work and provide a broad-based education that is more in tune with desired real-world competencies.

Faced with a greater choice of secondary education programmes, it is important that parents find out about the different IP models and programmes offered by these IP schools in order that the schools meet the interests and learning needs of the children.

Should I enrol my child in the Integrated Programme or the O-Level track

One assumption of an IP student is that students are self-disciplined enough to ensure that they manage their time well and be diligent in their studies, so that they could consolidate and reflect on their learning and yet find time to engage actively in independent learning. However, this is often not the case. Some IP students had previously attended tuition at Primary 6, which had enabled them to score well at PSLE to qualify for the Integrated Programme. Many of these students will continue to attend tuition at secondary levels in order to secure high scores each year.

The Integrated Programme is allegedly for university-bound students. If an IP student under-performs in the A-level examination, the student will face drastic consequences. For non-IP students who fail to perform well in the A-level examination, they still have their O-level certificate, which acts as a ‘safety-net’. IP students who fail to perform well in the A-level examination will have only their PSLE certificate to fall back on.

How can True Learning help my child

We have math classes that are catered separately for the IP students as well as the O-level track students to help them secure high scores every year. Designed by our Ex-Hwa Chong Institution Head of Department, Mr Max Tan, our Mathematics programme aims to equip students with the knowledge of key mathematical concepts, with a focus on understanding and applications. Our carefully crafted lesson plans and materials follow closely to the schools’ scheme of work. Students learn to make parallel connections across topics and undergo rigorous practice to familiarise themselves with the different types of questions.

Registration For 2019 Classes Is Ongoing
